Scheduling
Surgery is scheduled by the physician
and/or staff contacting the specialty team communication support associate (CSA) of the
Surgery Center. The patient care is organized and delivered by a dedicated specialty team.
Outpatient Care Unit
The Outpatient Care Unit consists of a
presurgery registration area, the outpatient pre-operative assessment area,
and the
Just-For-Today/Just-For-Kids Short Term Care Unit. The registration area is located on the
first floor of the Surgery Center on Pine Street, and consists of a large patient and
family waiting area, 2 laboratory stations, business/admitting office and several
pre-operative interview rooms. Pre-operative assessments are scheduled Monday through
Friday, up to four weeks prior to the planned day of surgery. For patient convenience, all
of the facilities needed to complete most routine outpatient surgery assessment and
testing are located within the Surgery Center. Every effort is made to complete outpatient
assessment in less than one hour from the time the patient arrives at the facility.
The outpatient pre-operative area is located on
the second floor of the Surgery Center, and accessed by a private
elevator from the first floor registration area . This unit consists of 16 private
rooms designated to prepare patients for surgery, as well as to receive patients from the
recovery area to prepare for discharge from the hospital.
Just For Today/Just For
Kids Short Term Care Center
The Just For Today/Just
For Kids Short Term Care Center is located on the sixth floor of
the Surgery Center and is open from 6 a.m.-11 p.m. It consists of adult patient
rooms and pediatric rooms, each with its own private bathroom. Bed reservations are made
at the time of scheduling the surgical procedure. The unit offers short-term care for
patients undergoing outpatient surgery, radiology procedures, blood transfusions,
pediatric procedures and Simply Surgery, an adult procedure room for lump and bump removal
and other surgeries requiring no anesthesia.
Endodiagnostic Center
The Endodiagnostic
Center, which opened in May 1996 and is located on the second floor
of the hospital, is a one-stop outpatient unit for endoscopies such as bronchoscopy,
esophagoscopy, and sigmoidoscopy procedures. The patient is registered and is admitted for
the short stay within the same unit where both the procedure and recovery takes place.
Open Heart Surgery
The Surgery Center
offers the only long term open heart surgery program within the Central Georgia area. The
program has been very successful over the past 20 years, with more than 1,100 procedures
performed in 1999. The knowledge and expertise of the open heart team, working in
conjunction with the Georgia Heart Center team, allows consumers to
stay within their own community to have this service, eliminating unneeded travel for
patient's families.
Advanced Surgery and
Laser Program
The Surgery Center created a new
minimally-invasive surgery program in April 1995, to focus on physician/staff education
for advanced surgical procedures, technical support, and marketing for these procedures.
The Surgery Center provides consumers with requested information about new methods of
surgery and current medical trends through written material such as brochures and
informative public seminars. This program ensures that The Medical Center of Central
Georgia and the physician staff build a reputation as active participants in technologies
and procedures which help to make surgery less traumatic and allow patients to return to
normal activity quickly.
