| On Dec. 19, 2001, the Diabetes Treatment Center at The Medical Center formally changed its name to Diabetes Healthways and moved into a new, larger, more convenient location. The new location is in Suite A of the Hemlock Medical Arts Complex at the corner of Hemlock and First streets. It is right across the street from The Medical Center and clients can park at the door.
Diabetes Healthways at The Medical Center is part of American Healthways, formerly Diabetes Treatment Centers of America (DTCA), the largest and most respected national network of diabetes centers. DTCA completed its corporate name change to American Healthways in 1999 due to its expansion in focus to cardiac and respiratory diseases. The Med had the choice of keeping the Diabetes Treatment Center name or changing to Diabetes Healthways.
The name change came about because Diabetes Healthways has a very positive, wellness focused sound. It more appropriately conveys what the service is all about and that is keeping people with diabetes healthy to avoid the long-term complications of the disease.
The new location is a definite improvement for patients. The center now has more room with a large classroom that can be sub-divided to allow two events/classes to be going on at the same time. The office now has a consultation room to allow privacy for one-on-one sessions and a larger, more comfortable waiting area for clients. Center clinicians also have private workspaces to better protect patient confidentiality while having phone conversations with patients and physicians. The
new location allows the staff the opportunity to expand our services and provide more convenience for their patients. Diabetes Healthways can now have multiple events going on in the center at the same time, whereas prior to the move, the staff had to use different conference rooms throughout the hospital. Clients are also enjoying parking at the door and having more room during class sessions.
Diabetes Healthways offers a comprehensive diabetes education program that is
recognized by the American Diabetes
Association for quality. Services also include the Insulin Pump Program, which is the largest in Central and South Georgia, and the Diabetes and Pregnancy Program. The center also offers lipid and weight management classes. Currently, there are three support groups offered: Diabetes Connection, the adult support group; a pediatric support group and the Pump For Life insulin pump group. Diabetes Healthways is committed to offering services to support people with diabetes in leading healthy lives.
