Surgeries at The Medical Center are performed at The Surgery Center or the Center for Ambulatory Services, depending on the type of procedure called for by your doctor. The Surgery Center is comprised of 20 state-of-the-art operating suites, a comprehensive Endodiagnostic Center, a Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) with 28 beds, and an Outpatient Care Unit.

The Surgery Center is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to manage elective and emergency procedures. A full range of specialty services are available, including Open Heart Surgery, Orthopaedics, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Thoracic, Gynecology, Vascular, ENT, Ophthalmology, Dental, Plastics, Urology, Gastroenterology, Pediatrics and Pain Management, with 135 world class surgeons credentialled to operate within the Surgery Center.

For outpatient surgeries, The Center for Ambulatory Services located at 1014 Forsyth Street, offers care, comfort and quality outpatient surgery without the hospital stay.

What are the different types of surgery?

Depending on the diagnosis, a patient has several surgery options:

• Optional or Elective Surgery
  A procedure you choose to have, which may not necessarily be essential to continue a good quality of life. An example would be to have an unsightly mole or wart removed.
• Required Surgery
  A procedure which needs to be done to ensure quality of life in the future. An example would be having kidney stones removed if other forms of medication and treatments are not working. Required surgery, unlike emergency surgery, does not necessarily have to be done immediately.
• Urgent or Emergency Surgery
  This type of surgery is done in reaction to an urgent medical condition, such as acute appendicitis.
