Specialty Guide

Allergy and Immunology - A medical specialty concerned with the hypersensitivity of the individual to foreign substances and protection from the resultant infection or disorder.

Anesthesiology - The medical study of how to eliminate pain and sensation in people undergoing surgery and other medical procedures. An anesthesiologist is a doctor administers anesthesia during surgery.

Behavioral Med - The study, prevention, and treatment of medical and psychosomatic disorders and of undesirable behaviors.

Cardiology (Cardiologist) - The medical study of the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the heart and blood vessels.

Dermatology - The field of medicine that specializes in the treatment of skin disorders.

Dentistry - (General) General Dentistry is defined as the evaluation, diagnosis, prevention and/or treatment (nonsurgical, surgical or related procedures) of diseases, disorders and/or conditions of the oral cavity, maxillofacial area and/or the adjacent and associated structures and their impact on the human body; provided by a dentist, within the scope of his/her education, training and experience, in accordance with the ethics of the profession and applicable law.

Dentistry: (Orthodontics) Orthodontics is that area of dentistry concerned with the supervision, guidance and correction of the growing or mature dentofacial structures, including those conditions that require movement of teeth or correction of malrelationships and malformations of their related structures and the adjustment of relationships between and among teeth and facial bones by the application of forces and/or the stimulation and redirection of functional forces within the craniofacial complex. Major responsibilities of orthodontic practice include the diagnosis, prevention, interception and treatment of all forms of malocclusion of the teeth and associated alterations in their surrounding structures; the design, application and control of functional and corrective appliances; and the guidance of the dentition and its supporting structures to attain and maintain optimum occlusal relations in physiologic and esthetic harmony among facial and cranial structures.

Dentistry-Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery - Oral and maxillofacial surgery is the specialty of surgery which involves the diagnosis, surgery, and adjunctive treatment of diseases and defects involving both the functional and aesthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region.

Dentistry: (Pediatric Dentistry) Pediatric Dentistry is an age-defined specialty that provides both primary and comprehensive preventive and therapeutic oral health care for infants and children through adolescence, including those with special health care needs.

Emergency Medicine - A branch of medicine concerned with an individual's resuscitation, transportation and care from the point of injury or beginning of illness through the hospital or other emergency treatment facility.

Endocrinology (Endocrine) - The scientific study of the function and pathology of the endocrineglands (for example the thyroid gland, pituitary gland, etc.)

Family Practice - A medical specialty concerned with the provision of continuing, comprehensive primary health care for the entire family.

Gastroenterology (GI) - The diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders affecting the stomach, intestines, and associated organs.

Gynecology (OB/GYN) - A branch of medicine dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the female reproductive organs.

Hematology/Oncology (Hem/Onc) - Hematology - The study of the morphology of the blood and blood forming tissues. Oncology - The study of diseases that cause cancer.

Infectious Disease - Any disease caused by the entrance, growth, and multiplication of bacteria or protozoans in the body; a germ disease.

Intensivist - Coordinates clinical care and manages the ICU staff and resources

Internal Medicine - The specialty of the general medicine of the internal organs.

Neonatology (Neonatologist) - The art and science of caring medically for the newborn.

Nephrology - A treatise on, or the science which treats of, the kidneys, and their structure and functions.

Neurology - The branch of science which treats of the nervous system.

Neurosurgery - A surgical specialty concerned with the treatment of diseases and disorders of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral and sympathetic nervous system.

OB/GYN - A commonly used abbreviation. GYN is short for gynecology (or a gynecologist).

Occupational Medicine - A branch of medicine concerned with the treatment of patients with occupational and environmental illness and injury.

Ophthalmology - The area of medicine dealing with the eye.

Ortho/Hand - Pertaining to the correction of deformities of the musculoskeletal system, pertaining to the hand.

Orthopaedics - Pertaining to the correction of deformities of the musculoskeletal system, pertaining to orthopaedics.

Otolaryngology - A branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders and diseases of the ears, nose and throat.

Pathology - The branch of medicine concerned with disease, especially its structure and its functional effects on the body.

Pediatrics - Pediatrics is concerned with the health of infants, children and adolescents, their growth and development, and their opportunity to achieve full potential as adults.

Physical Medicine/Rehab. - A medical specialty concerned with the use of physical agents, mechanical apparatus, and manipulation in rehabilitating physically diseased or injured patients.

Plastic Surgery - The branch of surgery concerned with restoration, reconstruction, or improvement of defective, damaged, or missing structures.

Podiatry - The medical study of the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the foot.

Psychiatry - A branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental illness.

Pulmonology - Of, relating to, or affecting the lungs

Radiology - The study of X-rays in the diagnosis of a disease.

Rheumatology - A branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis.

Thoracic - Relating to the chest or thorax.

Urology - A branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the urinary tract and urogenital system.
