Residency Program

The partnership of The Medical Center of Central Georgia (MCCG) and the Mercer University School of Medicine (MUSM), which began with the construction of MUSM in 1982, has led to a pattern of excellence in graduate medical education. The MUSM Educational Center at MCCG, constructed in 1982, provides space for medical education activities, and contains the Office of the MUSM Associate Dean for Graduate and Continuing Medical Education/MCCG Director of Medical Education. For coordination between MCCG and MUSM, the MCCG Medical Director also serves as MUSM Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs. With this degree of cooperation, a strong university medical center environment has been established that has benefited medical students, residency programs and the MUSM faculty, both clinical and basic science.

Family Practice
The Medical Center is an optimal setting for residency training in family medicine. Since the late 1920's, The Medical Center has continuously trained general or family practitioners. Family physicians, including residents, have direct admission privileges to all major areas of the hospital. The hospital offers state-of-the-art technology, and attending staff include all major clinical disciplines and subspecialties. The Medical Center's family practice residency program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

General Surgery
Since 1960, there has been a residency program in general surgery at MCCG, which was greatly strengthened by its affiliation with MUSM. Of the first 40 residents who completed the program, 32 practice general surgery and the others have completed fellowships in plastic surgery (4), vascular surgery (2), thoracic and cardiovascular surgery (1) and pediatric surgery (1).

The residency training program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

Internal Medicine
Internal medicine residents are involved in primary patient care as well as subspecialty medicine rotations. Involvement in a university teaching program located in a community hospital provides a wide variety of learning experiences. Research opportunities are available to residents and students, with faculty always willing to provide guidance.

The internal medicine residency training program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

Obstetrics and Gynecology
The residency program in obstetrics and gynecology is fully accredited for 12 residents (3 each year) by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Residents gain experience in all areas of obstetrics and gynecology through progressive increase in responsibilities with supervision of faculty. Private physicians contribute substantially to resident education. Excellent inpatient facilities, administrative support, and the talents and cooperation of faculty and private physicians maintain a strong successful residency education program.

Pediatrics
Mercer University School of Medicine and The Medical Center of Central Georgia were approved in 1994 to begin a residency training program in pediatrics. The program began accepting residents in 1995, with the intent to fill with four residents at each of three years of training. By the beginning of the 1996-97 academic year, 11 residents were in training at this institution. The faculty is made up of both general pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists, either under full-time employment with MCCG/Mercer or in private practice. Some pediatricians in rural areas serve as teaching faculty by precepting residents on office rotations. While a resident's practice choice cannot be dictated, it is a primary goal of the program to train general pediatricians who will meet the need for pediatricians in our state.
