Student Resources Practicum Information
The Mercer University School of Medicine Master
of Science in Anesthesia (MSA) is designed to provide the student with the
opportunity to develop the clinical skills required for the profession in a
controlled environment. The main clinical practicum site is the Medical
Center of Central Georgia. At this facility, the students will have the
opportunity to obtain clinical experience in regional and general
anesthetics related to the complete scope of surgical and non-surgical
interventions. The complex consists of a Children's Hospital, an Obstetric
Wing, a self-contained Ambulatory Surgery Center, a Cardiac Surgery program,
and an extensive invasive radiology and vascular department. Students will
also rotate to other facilities for enrichment experiences. These sites
include medically and non-medically directed anesthesia practices. As of
12/2008, four sites are approved for these rotations. The four sites are:
Houston Healthcare - Warner Robins, GA; Monroe County Hospital - Forsyth,
GA; Henry Medical Center - Stockbridge, GA; and Martin Army Community
Hospital – Ft. Benning, GA. Additional sites are planned.
Anatomy is provided at the medical school of Mercer University. The cadaver lab provides a challenge in applying the classroom instruction to an understanding of human anatomy. The anesthesia anatomy course focuses on components related to the performance of anesthesia and provides an exceptional foundation for the student's general and regional anesthesia experience. Two resource libraries are accessible for the anesthesia students. The Medical School Library and the Medical Center Resource Library offer a wide selection of information that is anesthesia related. Both libraries are utilized in the support of the student's research, their journal club presentations and in preparation for their becoming critical consumers of current research.
