Notes:
Year I – Fall semester: Students will be in class full time. Spring semester: Students will be in class three - four days and clinical one - two days. Summer session: Students will be in class one day and in the clinical area four days. Year II – Summer session: Students will be tested on simulated critical clinical incidents. Years II & III – All semesters - Students will be in class one day a week and in the clinical area four - five days a week. Credit – Academic credits for clinical time was calculated at 1 credit for each 40-hour segment. Students are projected to engage in 1000+ hours of anesthesia care for a total of 26 credit hours.
Course Descriptions Anesthesia courses will be taken only after admission to the anesthesia program, and in the sequence (without interruption) as prescribed by the curriculum on a full-time continuous basis.
MSA 601. Orientation Seminar (1 hour ) An introduction to clinical practice and an overview of the professional aspects of nurse anesthesia.
MSA 611. Advanced Clinical Anatomy (4 hours) The study of selected anatomical structures, embryological and histological origins that pertinent to the practice of anesthesia. Selected experiences in the cadaver laboratory.
MSA 612. Advanced Physiology (3 hours) Advanced study of physiology of the cell and body systems; blood, nerve, heart and circulation, body fluids and kidney, respiration, nervous system, liver, and endocrine. Emphasis is on feedback mechanisms, homeostasis, assessment and intervention. MSA 613 Advanced Pathophysiology (3 hours) Advanced study of pathophysiology with an overview of the biologic basis of disease in adults and children, including consideration of potential intraoperative management issues of common health problems, disease processes, and syndromes.
MSA 621. Principles of Anesthesia I (2 hours) Basic principles of anesthetic techniques and procedures involved in preparing patients for anesthesia, and the equipment used during the administration of anesthesia.
MSA 622. Principles of Anesthesia II (3 hours) Principles of anesthetic management and post-anesthesia care of adult, geriatric and pediatric patients undergoing a variety of procedures such as orthopedics, trauma and burns. Includes related anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, techniques and procedures for clinical experiences that are generally encountered by students during the first year of study.
MSA 631. Introduction to Research (2 hours) The study of methodology, design and data analysis in the planning, implementation and evaluation of research related to anesthesia. Students must develop and complete an approval study of a basis science research or clinical problem prior to the summer semester of the second year.
MSA 641. Advanced Pharmacology 1 (3 hours) General principles of pharmacology including biochemistry, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of anesthetic agents and muscle relaxants. Focus is on clinical pharmacology with inhalation anesthetics, opioids and non-opioids and compared ideal anesthetic agent. Includes study of drug interactions, drug abuse and addiction.
MSA 642. Advanced Pharmacology II (6 hours) Study of pharmacology related to the autonomic nervous system, cardiac and endocrine systems. Includes study of local anesthetics, fluid management and blood replacement.
MSA 643. Advanced Pharmacology III (3 hours) Study of the development and approval of drugs in the United States. Miscellaneous topics such as antimicrobial therapies, treatment of bronchospasm and histamine antagonists. Includes drugs and other treatments for acute and chronic pain.
MSA 651. Advanced Health Assessment (1 hour) Clinical evaluation and physical assessment for the nurse anesthetist.

First year – Spring (1
Credit Hour); Summer (5 Credit Hours)
MSA 723. Principles of Anesthesia III (3 hours) Anatomy, pharmacology and anesthetic techniques of regional anesthetics and analgesia. Principles of anesthetic management and post-anesthesia care of patients undergoing a variety of procedures related to clinical experiences that are generally encountered by students following the first year of study. Includes related anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, techniques and procedures related to anesthesia for neurological, thoracic, vascular, cardiac, obstetrics and neonatal surgeries.
MSA 724. Principles of Anesthesia IV (3 hours) The development of optimal anesthetic care plans derived from the knowledge of basic and advanced principles of anesthesia, individual research and problem solving skills.
MSA 732. Research Seminar (2 hours) Practical experience with using methodology, design, and data analysis in the planning, implementation and evaluation of research related to anesthesia. Completion of a capstone project with submission of publication prior to graduation. MSA 751.
