Department of Pharmacy Services
Pharmacy Practice Residency Program

Program Overview

Program Overview

The Department of Pharmacy Services offers a PGY-1, Pharmacy Practice Residency program with positions for two residents. This program has been accredited by the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists (ASHP) since 1996. The residency in pharmacy practice is an organized, directed, postgraduate training program that centers on development of the knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed to pursue rational drug therapy.

Program Goals

The purpose of this residency is to provide postgraduate training in the provision of direct patient care to multiple patient populations. Residents will develop effective written and verbal communication skills in order to provide education to, and interact with, patients, students, and a multi-disciplinary team of health care providers. Residents will exercise and continue to develop leadership skills and professionalism while learning to manage their own clinical pharmacy practice.

Program Structure

The residency is predicated on development of the knowledge, attitudes, and skills required to develop the resident's competence to provide pharmaceutical care. In order to provide training in all aspects of contemporary pharmacy practice, the resident will complete organized learning experiences in the following practice areas: acute patient care; ambulatory patient care; drug information and drug use policy development; and practice management.

These training segments will include the following required learning experiences:

    ·         Orientation

    ·         Acute Care

    n       Adult Medicine

    n       Internal Medicine

    n       Critical Care

    n       Pediatrics

    ·         Ambulatory Care - rotation and longitudinal

    ·         Drug Information/Practice Management –  rotation and longitudinal

    ·         Clinical Research – rotation and longitudinal

The resident is expected to complete a clinical research project for presentation at the Southeastern Residency Conference and preparation for journal submission. Pharmacy practice experience will include a staffing commitment every other weekend.

Four elective learning experiences may be chosen from the following list, all lasting four weeks:

  • Pediatric Intensive Care
  • Neonatology
  • Cardiology
  • Oncology
  • Advanced practice in any required learning experience

Salary and Benefits

The estimated resident stipend is $54,000. Full employee benefits are available including medical, dental, and life insurance, and vacation and sick leave accrual. Educational travel support is provided for the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting, Southeastern Residency Conference, and other offerings as approved by the program director.
